Club Membership Information & Initiatives
The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.
~ George Bernard Shaw
In this digital age would you believe that less than 50% of our members have an email entered into their club record? 3% of these emails bounce back in error. Unfortunately, this illusion is all to real for us. Getting important information out to our members keeps them in the loop and provides a sense of inclusion and empowerment. To better communicate, we are asking our clubs to seek out and provide updated email addresses for all of our members that have a personal or professional email account. Once this information is updated it will allow them to receive important and timely information from the district.
"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."
~ Abraham Lincoln
Our birthdays are important to us and celebrating recent birthdays at a meeting or function demonstrates that we care about each other. In the past, our member data only required that we report the year of our members birth for their records. Now, new members are asked to provide their full birth date and the data is stored in that fashion in the membership database. Data that existed before the change in policy automatically defaulted to January 1, of the "Year." To this end, we are asking our clubs to please update the information for their members to reflect the actual date. Keep in mind, this data is private and protected by Lions Clubs International.
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
~ Mark Twain
Knowing more about your members can help understand their perspective and how you can better meet their needs. Our respective occupations often provide our clubs with a unique and often untapped club resource. Member satisfaction is paramount for member retention and overall club health. To learn more about your members, ask them about their occupation and update the missing information for your club. The list in MyLCI is vast but not comprehensive. For most members you will find a choice on the list in MyLCI to match general categories for their various professions. When all else fails, you can simply choose "other" to replace a blank entry and enter the information into the Member Comments.
"Why a four-year-old child could understand this report. Run out and find me a four-year-old child." ~Groucho Marx
As the GMT, I receive a monthly report which tells me which clubs have reported in MyLCI. A reasonable person would agree that being a month or two behind is not a big deal and I would agree. However, not keeping on top of our membership information can have its consequences. As we all know, dues notices come in January and July but many are not aware that these bills are generated based on the membership at the close of December and June. So, we should do our best to update our membership data before these cycles close so we are not billed for dropped or deceased members. This is truly one of our simplest tasks as officers. For laughs, I recently timed how long it took me to log into MyLion, and report no changes for the month. Would you be surprised to learn that it took me less than a minute ?? If you are a new officer or just not sure where to begin with MyLion or MyLCI, Please contact me or your Zone Chair for help.
